BétaBoomen, founded by Maaike van den Boomen, offers secondary schools interdisciplinary and subject-based modules, given by students from technical universities in the Netherlands. We developed course materials for university students to teach, organised guest lectures by university students, and organised experiences for university promotional events. The pictures show an event for which we developed the user experiences. Following a gigantic flowchart, children could find out whether they are more likely to become a researcher, entrepreneur or manager. Each ‘dome’ was set up with actors to allow the children to experience these careers for a few minutes.
Starting as a teaching university student, I joined the BétaBoomen board (alongside Maaike) to develop modules, such as DIY electronics and Visual Programming, and run the company (part-time). BétaBoomen, whilst a viable concept, was discontinued in 2016 due to her board members (Maaike and me) both pursuing alternative careers.
